iidrivemyselfcrazy asked: Actually, I am mixed (black and white), but I don't consider myself just black. That's denying the other half of me. I consider myself mixed. On papers where it asks to to specify my race, I always put other. So Obama is not just black. He's mixed.
Okay, I’m kinda sick of the arrogant ignorance, so I’m gonna tackle this one head on.
Race is NOT biological, there is nothing scientific about it, so please stop referring to people like various breeds of dogs as if they can actually be “mixed.” Sure, you can self-identify as whatever you want to self-identify as, but don’t try and legitimize your bullshit with absolutes and affirmative statements—as if what you’re saying is rooted in any sort of science, it isn’t.
Ethnically, everyone is “mixed.” Scientists have long proven that every human being comes from the same origin in Africa, phenotypical differences are a result of the different geographical climates folks and their ancestors lived in after the first diaspora. In short, we’re all human—-although, not treated that way. Which brings me to:
Race is a SOCIAL CONSTRUCT, it was created in 1492 by the Reconquistadors with the advent of modernity and the nation-state. Today, in America, Obama is a black man, not because he has “black blood,” (there’s no such thing) but because he does not and will not have access to whiteness. In this country, if you “look” black (or brown), you’re black (or brown). Not because you say you are, but because the dominant structure of white supremacy says you are. Cops don’t check to see you identify as white or half-white, before they pull you over and shoot you 41 times for taking out your wallet. If you look black or brown enough for them, then that’s enough reason to open fire.
